Our family is not a movie watching one. We aren’t anti-cinema or anything, we just usually have so much more to do and talk about, it seems that we never get around to watching a movie. We also don’t have a television, so that lessens the lure of that particular type of recreation.
I also don’t like recommending movies to people, because what if they completely are offended by a movie, and then they end up never feeling the same way about me? So, I am hesitant, but here I go, about to make movie recommendations. However, always, always remember–we all have unique tastes.
1. Mother Teresa
This is probably my favorite movie. It makes me want to be better. Olivia Hussey’s portrayal is powerful. I was entranced. You can watch the full length movie here at YouTube, while you are waiting for your copy from Amazon to arrive.
2. I Am David
This is a movie that one must be emotionally prepared to watch, but what a beautiful message. Ben Tibber and James Caviezel give amazing performances and Joan Plowright’s is perfect.
3. 17 Miracles
Rob Gardner’s exquisite “Savior, Redeemer of My Soul” is woven as a theme throughout the film. That’s enough of a reason to watch it for me.
4. Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story
We got this from Netflix and it was wonderful. While it was TNT special and production values weren’t “blockbuster” quality, it was still a great movie.
5. Facing the Giants
Again, lower production values, but this movie was inspiring and good–and I don’t even like football.
Here is my favorite scene from the movie:
6. The Little Princess
I remember reading the book when I was little, but I think I like the film adaptation better. The soundtrack is amazing, as well.
7. Sense and Sensibility
This is my favorite girl movie. My husband also likes it, though. Witty, clever, beautiful. Although our Uncle Josh calls it “Talk and Talkability.”
8. Little Women
“Isn’t butter divinity?” My girls all love this movie.
9. Iron Will
I can’t find the trailer to this one, but what a great movie. My boys love it.
10. Boys Town
It’s old, but good.
11. Mr. Smith Goes To Washington
Another one that’s old, but good. I almost like it better than “It’s A Wonderful Life”. But maybe that’s because I am the queen of lost causes.
Now, for some movies I think might turn out to be great, although I have not yet seen them:
1. Buck
From the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. I love horses, and I believe they have a power to help people in ways we don’t realize. I think that’s part of why they are here. A dear friend recommended this movie to me based on her husband’s recommendation. I am intrigued.
2. Warhorse
Another horse movie, this time set in World War I. I am, again, intrigued.
That’s about all I can think of, but plenty for a year’s worth of movie watching. Hope you find at least one that you like!

You reviewed many of my favorites!
So many of our family favorites are on the list too! One really oldie but goodie (at least in our family’s tastes) is Judge Priest with Will Rogers. It is an old B&W film, very choppy editing at times, but we love it. Maybe because I was raised in the south and my husband served his mission there? Anyway there is no trick riding, it’s not even a cowboy movie. Will Rogers plays a lawyer and judge.
I’ve never heard of some of these! I’ve been wanting something “new” to watch…We have our small list of movies that are good enough to watch again, but sometimes I crave something fresh, lol. Like you, we don’t own a tv, so if we’re gonna watch it, it’s gotta be good. We do sometimes stream something straight from the net like BYU’s Generations Project (such an intriguing show…). I love Sense and Sensability, but I think Persuasion is my favorite (though I like the casting better in S&S). I haven’t even heard of the one on Mother Teresa or a few of the others.
Do your children like horse books? I recently rediscovered Marguerite Henry. She wrote historical fiction about horses. I haven’t read them all, but I am trying out Mustang: Wild Spirit of the West, King of the Wind: The Story of the Godolphin Arabian, and Justin Morgan Had a Horse.
We share a lot of favorites!
(S&S is my FAVORITE movie!) I also love the movie “Amazing Grace”. Have you seen that one?
I want to see the Mother Teresa movie– she’s a real hero of mine. It sounds wonderful!
What a fun post! Thanks, Misty!
Just found this list…thanks so much. I am pinning it so I can find all of the movies later. Wonderful!
